Lighting Controls System Commissioning
System commissioning is the structured process of verifying that a lighting control system is installed correctly, operates as intended, and is documented clearly for turnover.
In plain terms: commissioning is where we prove the system works the way the project requires — not just that it powers on.
What we commission
We commission lighting control systems across common technologies and protocols, including:
- DALI and DALI-2
- 0-10V dimming systems
- Relay/dimming panels
- DMX and sACN (architectural + entertainment crossover)
- BACnet IP and MSTP integrations
- Manufacturer-specific platforms (programming + verification)
What's included (typical commissioning scope)
1) Pre-commissioning review
- Review drawings/submittals and control narrative (sequence of operations)
- Confirm device schedules, zoning, and intended behaviors
- Identify open items that can block commissioning (power, network, addressing)
2) Field verification + functional testing
- Room-by-room / zone-by-zone functional checks
- Sensor verification (coverage, timeouts, daylight response)
- Switch station and scene verification
- Schedule and override verification
- Dimming performance checks (flicker, trim levels, curve behavior)
- Integration checks (when applicable): gateways, BAS points, time sync
3) Issue tracking + re-test
- Clear punch list with retest confirmation
- Documentation of what was corrected and what remains open
4) Turnover documentation
- Functional test checklists/results
- As-built notes (controls-related)
- Final configuration backups/exports (when supported)
- Owner-facing quick-start guidance
- Training support for end users and facility teams
Commissioning vs startup vs programming
- Programming: software configuration that defines behavior (scenes, schedules, sensor parameters).
- Startup: bringing the installed system online and confirming devices communicate and operate.
- Commissioning: verification and documentation that the system meets the project's functional intent and requirements.
Want a second set of eyes before turnover?
We'll help you verify performance, close the punch list, and deliver documentation that makes the system maintainable.
