Version Control for Lighting Controls Backups: Keeping the Right File in Play

Backups are only helpful if you know which one is current. A simple versioning system saves time during service, upgrades, and warranty calls.

Why it matters

"Version control for controls files prevents the wrong backup from becoming the source of truth after a change or service visit."

On a live project, the difference between a good controls design and a painful one usually comes down to how clearly the behavior is defined before anyone starts programming or testing.

Where projects get stuck

  • The newest file is saved with a vague name and gets overwritten later.
  • A service tech restores an older version because it was the first one found.
  • The owner receives a backup but cannot tell which revision is final.

Field checks

  • Use a consistent naming convention for every exported file.
  • Store the date, project name, and revision in the file name.
  • Keep the final version with the turnover package and another copy in a safe backup location.
  • Write down what changed so the next person can trace the history.

Bottom line

"The best backup is the one you can identify instantly when the building needs help."
