Lighting Controls Network Troubleshooting: VLANs, Gateways, and IP Conflicts

Modern lighting systems fail like networks because they are networks. The fastest fixes come from understanding the traffic path before touching the software.

Why it matters

"When a lighting system rides on the network, troubleshooting has to start with communication paths, not just device behavior."

On a live project, the difference between a good controls design and a painful one usually comes down to how clearly the behavior is defined before anyone starts programming or testing.

Where projects get stuck

  • The controller cannot see the gateway because the VLAN is wrong.
  • Two devices share the same IP address and intermittently knock each other offline.
  • The network team and the controls team have different assumptions about the route.

Field checks

  • Verify the network path from the controller to the gateway end to end.
  • Confirm IP addressing, subnetting, and gateway settings before blaming the software.
  • Check switch ports and link status when a device drops offline.
  • Document the network requirements so the next service call starts faster.

Bottom line

"The controls layer cannot work reliably until the network layer is boring and well documented."
