Lighting Control Priority Logic: What Wins Between Occupancy, Timeclock, and Manual Override

When multiple inputs can control the same zone, priority logic becomes the real design problem. This is how to decide what wins and what resets cleanly.

Why it matters

"Priority logic is where a lighting system becomes usable or frustrating. The best projects make the rules obvious to both the owner and the technician."

On a live project, the difference between a good controls design and a painful one usually comes down to how clearly the behavior is defined before anyone starts programming or testing.

Where projects get stuck

  • A timeclock turns the zone on while an occupancy sensor tries to turn it off.
  • Manual override lasts too long or disappears too quickly.
  • Different zones in the same space follow different rules with no explanation.

Field checks

  • Write the priority order in the sequence of operations before programming begins.
  • Test every combination of occupancy, timeclock, and manual input.
  • Confirm how the system returns to automatic control after an override.
  • Make sure the owner knows which input has final authority.

Bottom line

"If the priority order is not written down, someone will discover it the hard way after occupancy starts."
