Commissioning Reports That Hold Up: Photos, Test Steps, and Proof of Performance

A commissioning report should protect the project long after the tools are packed up. The best reports make the tested result hard to dispute.

Why it matters

"Good commissioning reports do more than say the system passed. They show how it was tested, what was observed, and what proof was collected."

On a live project, the difference between a good controls design and a painful one usually comes down to how clearly the behavior is defined before anyone starts programming or testing.

Where projects get stuck

  • The report says the system passed but does not explain how the result was verified.
  • Photos are missing or do not show the actual test condition.
  • The report cannot be used later because the steps are too vague to repeat.

Field checks

  • Record each test step in the same order it was performed.
  • Include photos that show the condition before and after the test.
  • Write the report so another technician could understand the result months later.
  • Keep the report aligned with the actual sequence of operations.

Bottom line

"A strong commissioning report reduces arguments because the evidence is already attached."
